The Managed Web Service (MWS) provides University users with a versatile infrastructure on which to run websites. In the range of services provided by UIS to run websites it fits between a VM service, which provides hardware and network only, and Falcon, which provides pre-installed, pre-configured content management.

It is intended for groups who are able to write their own web pages or install and maintain their own applications, who wish to have their own server, but would prefer to avoid the overhead of running one.

MWS servers are available to support of the work of the University, the Colleges and its related institutions. They can also be used to support collaborations with outside bodies providing they are managed and maintained by current members of staff or resident students of the University.

Features and Benefits

Features & Benefits

The Managed Web Service provides Unix-based web hosting which:

  • is similar to commercial web hosting providers
  • doesn't need significant Unix knowledge
  • provides delegated management

All servers feature:

Site administrators manage their MWS Servers via the MWS Control Panel, and are expected to install and support the content as required.

A server in the Managed Web Service has the following characteristics:

  • a server with 1 Core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 20Gb of disk space on modern SSD storage (10Gb of which is available to the user, the rest is used for other purposes like snapshots)
  • a public IPv4 address and a public IPv6 address
  • a simple web-based control panel to control all the features of the Managed Web Service
  • integrated with University DNS services, making relevant host names automatically available
  • integrated with UIS authentication and authorisation: UIS password via Raven for access to the control panel, UIS password for interactive login to sites, Lookup groups for access control
  • backups and user access to frequent file system snapshots as standard
  • geographically-diverse dual-location high-availability as standard
  • a cost of only £100 a year (no VAT for University institutions)
  • each server hosts one or more websites (between which the above resource will be shared)

When is this service available?

Sites on MWS and the control panel are available 24/7. Sites are implemented on a pair of hosts located in physically distinct data centres within the University. Data is replicated between hosts such that MWS servers can be transparently and automatically moved between hosts for maintenance or following a failure. This is expected to lead to very high underlying availability of individual sites.
