Features and Benefits

Features & Benefits

This service allows the CUDN and institutional routers to exchange routing information and dynamically reroute traffic in the event of the failure of a link or router, even via a completely different connection to the CUDN, at another site.

BGP also allows cooperating institutions to back up each other's connections in two ways:

  • A manual backup arrangement whereby one institution can advertise the IP ranges of another for a temporary period. In the event of a problem at the primary site, the secondary site can provide connectivity to an off-site backup server. This can be for some, all, or even one, IP address.
  • Institutions can link their networks together and offer backup connectivity to each other. Traffic will normally use the primary connections but failover to the link between institutions, in the event of either failing. Traffic between the institutions will normally not go via the CUDN (however, all this can be dynamically controlled by the institutions).
