The Institutional Network Connection (or pop switch) connects an internal institutional data network to the rest of the Cambridge University Data Network (CUDN) and the outside world, via JANET. It is available in a number of speeds and connection types.

This essential service is required for any institution that wishes to connect local IT infrastructure to the CUDN. The link is provided via a UIS managed point-of-presence (POP) switch.

  • The connection is maintained, supported and monitored by UIS.
  • The pop switch hardware is rented to the Institution and remains the property, and responsibility, of UIS.

The CUDN connection can be offered with a variety of options:

  • 1G uplink.
  • 10G uplink - with a mixture of 10G, 1G, or a mixture of 10G and 1G downlink ports available for the customer.
  • UPS support
  • Redundant power supplies
  • BGP (requires additional local network configuration)

The CUDN connection automatically comes with:

  • Dual uplinks for redundancy
  • PoE ports for access ports or telephones (on 1G copper ports only)

The CUDN connection charge is an annual charge, billed in advance, for August through to July of the following calendar year. The current charges are listed on the CUDN Connection Prices page.
