The Granta Backbone Network (GBN) has multiple singlemode and multimode fibre circuits connecting all University institutions and most sites. These circuits are available to rent for institutions to establish private network connections between sites for a variety of uses.

A privately rented GBN fibre can offer significant advantages over a normal CUDN connection in the right situation, including:

  • enhanced privacy of data
  • uncontested bandwidth
  • improved network simplicity as remote sites are connected as local sites
  • high availability
  • excellent range. The longest fibre circuit in use is over 10km in length, running at 10G
  • competitive rental price compared to commercial solutions.
