The Managed Print Service by Desktop Services (DS-Print) enables users in participating institutions to access networked printers from their own machines, with full logging and accounting support for the institution. The service is available whether or not the institution has its own Managed Cluster of desktop machines.

Features and Benefits

Features & Benefits
  • Accessible from any computer connected to the Cambridge University Data Network (CUDN) or beyond
  • Central credit facility for users (common balance) for subscribing DS-Print institutions.
  • Institutions can reduce their administrative burden, lower costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

How Much Does It Cost?

How much does it cost?

Printing charges for the Managed Printing Service (DS-Print)

All output on DS-Print printers is subject to charging, though individual Departments may provide a free quota for their students. Many institutions, including UIS, charge by way of the "common balance".

Under this system, users pre-pay (by debit or credit card or by cash) into a credit balance which can then be used for printing on any printer linked to the common balance. Other institutions operate their own charging schemes (against a student's College bill, for example).

For institutions which have a Managed Cluster, the charges for support of printing and print accounting are rolled into the overall Managed Cluster charge, except for multi-function devices (MFDs), for which a separate charge is made.

For other participating institutions see the price list for commissioning and printing charges.

Enquiries about the scheme should be addressed to

How Do I Get This Service?

How do I get this service?

UIS provides the following self service facilities:

A4 laser printers in various Managed Cluster rooms and
A3 printing in the Phoenix Teaching Room 2 and Service Desk (New Museums Site) during Term only.

By default all printing is one-sided but all the printers are capable of duplex (two-sided) printing.

More sophisticated printing facilities are available from the UIS Print Room (Roger Needham Building, West Cambridge site).

They are also available in various institutions independently of any Managed Cluster via the Managed Printing Service. Information about what is available in a particular institution should be sought from local support staff.

Using the DS-Print printer facility (in a Managed Cluster or elsewhere) requires installation of the PaperCut client program on your own computer (Windows or Mac OSX).
