Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) provide a secured network infrastructure with. Some institutions have a requirement for a service which is only accessible by their own members. UIS offers a managed, institutional version of the UIS VPN service to meet this need.

Features and Benefits

Features & Benefits

The institutional service uses the same network access tokens as the the main UIS VPN service. However, it differs in three ways:

  1. hostname of the VPN server is different – typically in the domain of the requesting institution (eg vpn.botolphs.cam.ac.uk)
  2. IP addresses issued to connecting clients will come from a known, exclusive range which institutions can use to provide privileged access to services by permitting them through firewalls or other IP-based access controls
  3. the users who can access the service are limited to a subset of all users, controlled using an institutionally-managed Lookup group

A VPN connection improves network security by automatic data encryption and online anonymity.

How Much Does It Cost?

The service is free of charge to end users, but must be subscribed to by a University institution. Charges are outlined on the VPN managed service page.

How Do I Get This Service?

How do I get this service?

Computer Officers of Institutions may request the service via . The initial request should contain the following information:

  1. What the hostname of the VPN gateway server should be (e.g. vpn.botolphs.cam.ac.uk). This will act as the front-end for the new service.
  2. Please state explicitly that you are agree to UIS creating and managing server certificates for this hostname.
  3. A new subnet of CUDN-wide private IP addresses (typically a /24 block) is allocated for use by VPN clients. Please chose whether this subnet should be treated as part of the trusted institutional network or whether you only want some of these allocated. This may involve some reconfiguration of the routing between your institutional network and the CUDN.
  4. Access to the managed VPN is controlled by membership to a Lookup group. A new group will be created within the client Institution to control network access (recommended), or an existing Lookup group can be used.  Please state which of these is required.

No special configuration is needed for PCs. Apple users will need a custom "mobileconfig" file, which UIS will provide.
