Desktop Video Conferencing

Adobe Connect was previously the preferred desktop videoconference software supplied by UIS, however due to financial constraints the subscription will not be renewed this academic year and accounts will no longer work after July 31st.

Webex is available from UIS as an alternative and users may also like to investigate other possibilities such as Jitsi Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom etc.

Adobe Connect Web-conferencing and collaboration is highly adaptable. It offers a virtual version of life-like meeting scenarios. It can be started and joined via a browser or app, on almost all desktop (managed or personal)s, laptops or mobile devices.

Among its many options it provides:

  • virtual and hybrid (blended) meetings (virtual office hours, seminars, courses or conferences)
  • personal or shared/reusable virtual rooms
  • persistent rooms - single URL for each reusable room simple
  • recording option for any event with access control
  • interactive whiteboards
  • instant polls, chat and Q&A areas
  • desktop sharing and remote control options
  • private preparation areas and breakout groups
  • ability to accommodate large meetings (100+ visible users)
  • flexible and customisable user interface
  • flexible licensing, mobile apps

Adobe Connect is currently free and available to all University staff. It is possible that a group of users may wish to continue the current subscription on a cost-recovery basis and we will provide information about this if the initiative bears fruit.

How quickly can I get this service? 

Consultancy is helpful, especially during the pilot service phase, and because of the flexible and customisable nature of the service.  A minimum of one week is advisable. The more time is avilable in advance, the easier it will be to advise on accounts and equipment required in the event pre-planning stage.

Self-service access is available at all hours and locations, including pre-arranged or ad hoc online and telephone support.

Support from UIS staff may be available outside normal working hours*. This must be booked in advance and is charged at UIS consulting rates.
