The Mailing List Service facilitates the creation and management of lists for easily sending emails to a defined group of email addresses.

UIS currently manage 10,000 mailing lists across the University. All lists are in the mail domain.

The Mailing List Manager is based on the widely-deployed GNU Mailman system and offers many features and benefits, including:

  • a summary page which shows all the lists an individual is subscribed to, owns and moderates
  • optional automated processing for requests to subscribe to and unsubscribe from a given list
  • designated list moderaters can decide which mail messages are appropriate for a given list
  • both automatic and manual filtering of messages
  • automatic processing of bounce messages generated by invalid addresses in order to keep mailing lists current
  • mailing list archives maintaintenance
  • eliminates need to buy and maintain software
  • no email server hardware required
  • allows recipients to opt in/out of mailing lists themselves (according to the list owner's preference)
  • reduces the administrative overhead of managing lists

To apply for a mailing list, please complete an Application for Group Computing Resources form online.
