Wilkes2 is the largest graphics processing unit (GPU) enabled supercomputer for academic research in the UK. It is comprised of 90 nodes each with 4 Nvidia P100 GPUs.  It supports the University's research community with GPU-accelerated high performance computing. Users with applications that require GPU computing are welcome to apply for accounts.

  • 90 nodes based on the Dell PowerEdge C4130.

Each node contains

  • 1 x Intel Xeon E5-2650 v4 2.2GHz 12-core processor
  • 96GB RAM
  • Single Rail Mellanox EDR
  • 4 x Nvidia P100 GPU 16GB.
  • Theoretical node peak (CPU+GPU): 19.61 TFlops/s
  • Connects to the 5PB/s LustreFS shared with Peta4.

Wilkes users have access to support by a team of GPU computing and HPC experts.

How much does it cost? 

Two levels of service are available:

  • a free service, with relatively restrictive per-job resource limits and a cap on total usage per quarter, or
  • fee-paying by core hour credit, with higher scheduling priority, less restrictive per-job resource limits, and no quarterly limitations

GPU hours can be purchased at the internal rate of 20p each, please ask your department to raise a purchase order (PO) to Information Services for the desired number and type of resource units. Please be sure to mention on the PO the name of the project, or the PI, owning the new resources, and email the PDF of the PO to

The lead time for obtaining an account on Wilkes2 is a maximum of a week, subject to authorisation by the applicant's Principal Investigator.
