The provision of large data (multi-terabyte) storage facilities for all research groups in any institution within the University. These can either be directly connected to the High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster or stand-alone facilities.

Features and Benefits

Features & Benefits

Large and efficient data storage is a prerequisite for use of the central HPC services. A certain amount is provided automatically to users of those services. However, it is also possible to obtain dedicated group-specific space to increase storage. This can be provided with various levels of resilience (RAID level, backup). The service provides clients with:

  • specific remotely accessible storage areas for research computing, which may or may not be directly attached to the central HPC facilities
  • storage with the appropriate levels of performance, resilience and security for the type of data to be stored
  • high-security storage physically located within the West Cambridge Data Centre

How Much Does It Cost?

How much does it cost?

Cost depends strongly on the desired levels of performance, resilience and security as these may require hardware purchases and significant installation effort.

For dedicated storage, integrated with the Lustre storage directly attached to the central HPC clusters (which requires minimal additional work to create), the current cost is £6.50 per TB per month.

How Do I Get This Service?

How do I get this service?

Direct connection to the HPC clusters requires the Lustre file system unless performance is not a priority. Please contact the RIS Support Team via:

How Quickly Can I Get This Service?

How quickly can I get this service?

This will depend strongly on the nature and technical complexity of the requirement (from days to weeks). Storage requiring new hardware purchases will possibly take several weeks due to procurement procedures and the staff effort required to install and configure.
