The University Card allows you to access University buildings, once authorised; be identified as a University employee or student; access Library facilities; obtain discounts from many businesses in Cambridge, and around the world.

It looks like a credit card containing the cardholder’s name and photo, college scarf (students, Fellows and College members only), plus a barcode that is primarily used for University Library borrowing.

Features and Benefits

Features & Benefits

The University Card offers the following features and benefits:

  • Most University buildings are now using the University Card as a 'key' to gain entry. Your Card will need to be activated for this service and access to specific doors will need to be granted before you can gain entry.

  • Library Services
  • All personal University Cards carry a barcode on the back, this barcode can be used by the Library to turn your card into a Library Card.

If you are a new student, either under or postgraduate, your application to study at University of Cambridge includes the collection of information to produce your University Card and you don't need to do anything, your College will issue you with your card when you arrive. If there isn't a card waiting for you then check with the Card Representative in the College who will be able to tell you what the problem is.

For Staff

Delivery lead time for new staff varies. New staff will be guided through the process of applying for a University Card by their local card representative or by a department administrator. Not all staff are eligible for a personal card; this depends on meeting certain criteria*.
