Raven is the University-wide authentication system for restricted web services such as CamSIS, the MCS, Desktop Services, Moodle, the University Lookup Directory and many other facilities at University, Department or College level.
It is operated by University Information services (UIS).

Raven authentication is a server-based user identification tool that

  • controls access to non-public online resources of the University of Cambridge and affiliated institutions
  • differentiates between access right levels depending on user status (some websites will only be accessible to members of a specific institution, for example).
The authentication takes the form of  a Raven login using a combination of standard UIS identifier (CRSid) in combination with the UIS password
Once a user request to access a particular Raven-protected website has been verified, the authentication remains valid for the duration of the current browsing session.
Default options for cookies and session expiry of the Raven login facility can be customized via Raven Account Management settings.

How do I get this service? 

Current members of the University and affiliated institutions are provided with a password for the Raven authentication system as part of their UIS account when they arrive. 

Non-members of the University who perform University business for which they need a password for Raven may apply by post, using the application form for UIS resources.

Automated Raven server response to authentication requests is immediate.
